Instagram has many security and privacy features to keep a user’s information protected. However, the most important thing to do is to inform kids about threats on the platform. If parents cannot get access to their account, they need to be informed on how to use the app safely.
- Enter Your Child’s Birthday
Now when anyone creates an Instagram account, they must enter their birthday. First, this is done to confirm the users is above the age of 13. Depending on the age of the user, Instagram will provide them with ways they can be safe and recommend privacy setting they should use.

This feature will allow your child to make sure they actually know the person who has requested to follow them.
- Remove Unwanted Followers
This new feature allows users to delete profiles that are already following you. This is great for profiles that are fake or post abusive content. All your child needs to do is click on the three dots in the top right corner of the user’s profile and click remove. This will remove the user from the your child’s follower list without notifying the person.
- Turn Off Commenting
By selecting turn off commenting on the account’s posts, this will only allow other users to like your photos or videos. This will help protect your children from cyberbullying attacks and hide offensive comments. All they need to do is click on the three dots in the top right corner of their post and click on turn off commenting.
- Be Aware Of Tagged Photos
Sometimes, users are tagged in photos that are not relevant to them or we not in at all. This could be a crucial sign of a scammer, hacker, or someone looking to boost their post’s reach. For your child to view their tagged photos, they just need to swipe left on their profile. Then, they can click on the tagged post to view it. To remove it from their profile, they need to click the three dots in the top right corner → Hide Options → Remove Me From Post.
What To Teach Your Kids About Instagram
- Know Your Followers

There are however, fake profiles and other threats within the billions of profiles. To keep your child’s content safe and protected, only allow them to connect with names and profile pictures they (and you) recognize.
- Block and Report Other Profiles
Teach them to use social media effectively not just with Instagram, but with all social media apps. Each social media has a feature that allows you to block profiles that you do not want to see. You can even report content within the apps which will notify the app about the report to help filter out abusive or inappropriate content.
- Don’t Click On Links
Scammers are able to disguise themselves on social media much easier and look like an official user. These scammers can access a user’s information with a simple click of a link from their profile.
